Product Description

by Timm Siebeneck (Author)

From 1834 until the close of the nineteenth century, after Gottfried Duden published a book in which he compared the Missouri River to the Rhine in Germany and praised the mild climate on the Missouri frontier, thousands of Germans immigrated to the state. These new immigrants brought their culture and language with them and changed the landscape of Missouri history. German Language in Mid-Missouri offers a brief history of Germans in Mid-Missouri and a study in how the German dialects of Osage and Cole counties have borrowed, repurposed and incorporated American English words and phrases. Additionally, the publication presents the viewer with illustrations, paintings, historical photographs, German language publications from Missouri, and charts.

Author Biography

Timm Siebeneck was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia and has been an English teacher for the better part of 17 years in Missouri. He has taught German, French and English at a language institute in Washington, D.C. and has practiced as a translator of Germanic and Romance languages. Moreover, Mr. Siebeneck has engaged in studying and producing art since childhood. All of the selections of art presented in this book are samples of the author's work. Mr. Siebeneck is also the author of Rocheport: History of a River Town, Our Missouri: English, History and Culture for Second-Language Learners and Cooking Up History in Elston, Missouri. He now lives in Rocheport, Missouri, where he runs a small independent bookstore and art gallery. When Mr. Siebeneck is not engaged in one of the aforementioned professions, he can be found cycling the Katy Trail or catching the fantastic sunset from his back porch.
