Product Description

by Ellen B. Cutler (Author)

From The Depths is a biography of the artist Gary Horn (aka G Gray THorn) that explores his dyslexia, bipolar disorder, and development as a painter. His youth in Iowa and troubled family relationships lead to impulsive enlistment in the army and service in Vietnam. The formal education he hoped would make him an artist qualified him to teach; becoming an arti was something he would learn on his own. An unloving marriage nearly derailed his ambitions and ended his hopes. Finally, there is the emergence of his distinctive art.

Horn's struggles with reading disabilities and mental illness are a theme throughout, as he travels from the Heartland to South Carolina, Kansas, and ultimately to New York City. The story of how he found his creative voice and survived overwhelming challenges is inspirational. The Appendix includes a bibliography of books, films and videos that had a significant impact on his ideas about ethics and politics, art, and his techniques and creative influences.
