Her first item published was a poem written in high school and published in the school newspaper. After spending a year at Marion College in Marion, Indiana, she graduated from The Christ Hospital School of Nursing in 1975, and worked in numerous hospitals and in-patient home care. In 2008 she left patient care to work for insurance companies using her medical expertise to interpret client records. In 2019, she retired from nursing and now lives in Strafford, Missouri. Her family and friends consider her to be a champion pie baker.
