Empowering Beginning Teachers Through Mentoring is a structured, research-based beginning teacher mentoring program designed for schools or school districts that want to implement a beginning teacher mentoring program or enhance an existing beginning teacher mentoring program. The essential components of an effective beginning teacher mentoring program are discussed in detail. The program includes a timeline, a beginning teacher needs assessment, forms for documentation, and a summative survey.

Author Biography

Dr. Theresa Landrum is an educator. She has earned a master's degree in education, a second master's degree in educational management, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership. She has taught English, Language Arts & Reading in a variety of public school settings, and has witnessed the lack of support for beginning teachers. Her passion to empower beginning teachers is what motivated her, during her doctorate studies, to explore what type of assistance is needed to make their first year of teaching less stressful and more rewarding. Theresa has done extensive research on beginning teacher mentoring programs in U.S. schools, and based on the findings, she has developed a beginning teacher mentoring program. The overall goal of the program is to help beginning teachers to make a smooth transition into the teaching profession by providing the skills and support needed to remain in the classroom for many years as well adjusted, competent educators.
