Wings of Wisdom: The Egyptian Glass Great Horned Owl Ornament

Few creatures command the night — or a holiday tree — quite like the great horned owl, and this magnificent hand-blown Egyptian glass specimen arrives in full dramatic flight, wings flung wide in a display of utterly breathtaking presence. The body glows in rich amber and deep cognac brown, while broad wings rendered in warm golden glass stretch wide with extraordinary feather detail, each quill lovingly formed by the glassblower's breath and skill. A silver-toned face gazes forward with imperious calm, twin ear tufts raised in characteristic alertness, and a pair of vivid blue Asfour crystal eyes that follow you across the room with an intensity that is, frankly, a little uncanny.

The owl has presided over human mythology as a symbol of wisdom and mystery since ancient times — the goddess Athena kept a little owl as her constant companion in Greek legend, and the Romans considered owls omens of great significance (Julius Caesar's death was reportedly foretold by an owl's cry). The ancient Egyptians had their own complex relationship with owls, depicting them in hieroglyphs as the letter "M" while also associating them with the passage of the soul into the afterlife. An owl crafted by Egyptian hands, then, carries rather a lot of symbolic weight for something that fits in the palm of your hand.
