Product Description

by Elaine Mancusi (Author)

Edward S. Curtis - The North American Indian contains a collection of Curtis' works originally owned by Frank Donohue. The collection contains Volume II, Volume III, 57 photogravures and 17 rare, some never seen before, lantern slides. This is a unique collection. It contains some unpublished photogravures, photogravures on experimental paper, unnumbered books and printers proof photo-lithographs for an article Curtis wrote for Scribner's Magazine in 1909. It also contains 17 rare lantern slides used by Curtis in his stereopticon shows. The book also contains excerpts from Curtis' volumes, his other writings, titles and descriptions of each photogravure.

Author Biography

Elaine spent the majority of her life in NJ, but after one too many snowstorms, she moved to sunny Florida. Not having to shovel snow has given her time to put together a book about the Edward S. Curtis collection she inherited from her grandfather, Frank Donohue. Frank worked for Mr. Curtis, a noted photographer of North American Indians, in the early 1900s. During this time he put together an unusual collection of Curtis works including two Volumes, photos printed on various types of experimental paper and lantern slides that were used by Curtis himself, during his stereoptic presentations. As a child, Elaine spent many hours looking at the collection and thinking about the grandfather that passed away before she was born. This book is her attempt at sharing the collection, she loves, with the world.
