The Discus (scientifically known as Symphysodon) is a genus from the Cichlidae family. The Discus is a freshwater fish that is native to the Amazon river basin. The Discus thrives in the Neotropical rivers and floodplain lakes of the Amazon. All Symphysodon species have a latterly compressed body in a similar fashion to the latterly compressed bodies of the Cichlids. However, unlike the Cichlid, the Discus has no extended finnage which gives their bodies the rounded shape that inspires their name.
