What would it be like to serve on a submarine? Going to sea on a ship built to sink doesn't really make much sense does it? A crazy idea that most any sane person would walk away from!
My eyes were wide open when I went down that hatch for the first time. Maybe even wider when we made the first dive! Neither of which took away from the feeling that this was still a crazy idea! What was it that kept me there? Simple...Those proven submariners who had already earned the right to wear the dolphin medal on their uniforms were the heroes. Only through them could you gain that recognition... Nothing was given, each step had to be earned. It was the heritage handed down to them and they held it to their hearts with a fierce pride... Crazy or not! I just had to prove to all of them that I could be one of them too! Come share some of my many adventures...Learn why today my step might not be so steady but it still has a bit of a swagger and my memories, such as they are, still leave me smiling with pride. That crew of heroes, so many years ago, did make me one... one of the few... a "Submariner!"
