Su mayor preocupación ha sido mantener y desarrollar en la juventud cubanoamericana un conocimiento más profundo de sus raíces.

Dr. Raúl M. Shelton was a professor at the Universidad Católica Santo Tomás de Villanueva (Saint Thomas of Villanueva Catholic University) in Havana, Cuba, from 1951 to 1961, the year he went into exile. He continued teaching and retired Professor Emeritus from St. Thomas University, in Miami, Florida. He co-authored several important books with other academics from the University of Miami's Economic Research Group. His greatest aspiration has been to maintain and develop in Cuban-American youth a deeper understanding of their roots.

In this book Dr. Shelton presents the history of Cuba with an emphasis on the culture that has been the foundation of Cuban nationality. An essential book for the understanding of Cuba and Cubans.
