Have you heard this narrative? The middle class has been hollowed out because of an overreliance on free markets. Norbert J. Michel is vice president and director of the Cato Institute's Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, where he specializes in issues pertaining to financial markets and monetary policy. Michel is the author of the book Why Shadow Banking Didn't Cause the Financial Crisis, and the coauthor of Financing Opportunity: How Financial Markets Have Fueled American Prosperity for More than Two Centuries. He also writes a bi-weekly column for Forbes.com.
