Product Description

by Ronan Guillou (Photographer), Michel Poivert (Text by (Art/Photo Books)), Bill Kouwenhoven (Text by (Art/Photo Books))

Produced between 2011 and 2013, the Country Limit series covers a broad geographical zone that extends from the vast plains to the outskirts of American cities in several states. The title refers to the City Limit sign that marks the entrance into American urban areas. With a combination of social description and topographical observation, Ronan Guillou presents photographs of Americans in the rural world and of landscapes that are marked by human activity. Within this narrative are references to the myth of majestic landscapes and the pioneer era--allusions to nostalgia for yesterday's adventures and a bygone era.

Author Biography

Ronan Guillou: French photographer born in 1968, Ronan Guillou lives in Paris where he has been working as a professional photographer since 1997.In the early 2000s, he began his first personal photographic investigations of American urban spaces, conducted alongside advertising and other commissions for French and international magazines. The United States gradually became Guillou's main subject and is the ongoing inspiration for an odyssey in color across the America of this new millennium. His approach aims to combine both documentary intent and formal exploration, and allows luck and chance encounters to steer the narrative.

Michel Poivert (born 1965) is professor of the history of contemporary art and photography at the Sorbonne. He has taken a special interest in pictorialism, the subject of his doctorate thesis. From 1995 to 2010, he was president of Société française de photographie, the French Photography Society.

Bill Kouwenhoven is International Editor of HotShoe magazine. HotShoe is Europe's leading contemporary photographic magazine. In addition to working with HotShoe for the past three years, Mr. Kouwenhoven is a frequent contributor to numerous other contemporary photography journals in the United States, England and Europe including Afterimage, Aperture, British Journal of Photography, Foto 8, Photonews, Foto, European Photography, and Camera Austria. From 1996 to 2001 he was editor of the late but fondly remembered Photo Metro magazine of San Francisco. He lives and works in Berlin and New York.
