Cattle farming, ranching, or raising refers to the business of growing and breeding cattle for the purpose of food production (meat, milk, and other by-products).
- Beef cattle are kept primarily for the production of beef and other types of meat. In order to produce beef, farmers must first breed, raise, and tend to cattle. The Angus, Hereford, Charolais, and Simmental types of cattle are the most widely raised for beef.
- Milk and other dairy products including cheese, yogurt, and butter are the main products from dairy cattle farms. Holsteins, Jerseys, and Guernseys are all examples of dairy breeds. Milking cows on a regular schedule and keeping them healthy and well fed are two essential parts of dairy farming.
Activities that can fall under the umbrella of "cattle farming" include:
- Breeding: Selecting and mating bulls and cows to create offspring with desirable qualities, such as good meat quality or high milk output.
- Cattle need specific kinds of food, thus it's important to feed them. Grazing on pastures, eating hay or silage, and supplementing with grains or other feed are all viable options here.
- Care for the health and well-being of the cattle, including immunization, disease prevention, and the treatment of any injuries or illnesses that may arise.
- Housing refers to the provision of sufficient shelters, like barns or open grassland, to shield cattle from the elements.
- Herd management entails keeping tabs on and controlling the herd's demographics and health.
Whether a farm is huge or small, whether the primary focus is on beef or dairy production, and a host of other factors all contribute to the wide range of methods used to raise cattle.
Sustainable and responsible cow farming practices are a focus of continuous discussions and advances in agriculture because of the concerns it raises about environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and the management of natural resources.
