Product Description
Carinthia is often called the Crye Precision of Europe, and the comparison holds up: the Austrian brand has built its reputation on some of the most technically serious cold-weather gear made anywhere. The HIG 4.0 is the current generation of their flagship insulated jacket, and we picked up a bulk lot direct, which is the only reason we can offer it close to $200 below standard retail with free shipping in the continental US.
The insulation is Carinthia's proprietary G-LOFT®, a synthetic fill rated among the best warmth-to-weight ratios available, layered at 145g/m² through the body and 110g/m² in the arms so the sleeves stay mobile while the core stays warm. The outer shell is a water-repellent 100% polyamide with a PTFE membrane, breathable enough to avoid trapping moisture during real exertion, not just standing around. A 3-way adjustable hood stows directly into the collar when you don't need it, and the cut is optimized with reduced outer seams to cut down on cold spots. Carinthia rates it for continuous wear down to -20°C (-4°F).
Fit runs oversized by design, built to layer. Order your normal jacket size if you plan to wear a fleece or base layer underneath, size down if you're wearing it alone, or size up if you want room for heavier layers. For reference, our in-house model is 5'11", 180 lbs, and wears a medium. Customers have used it for exactly what it's built for: one wears it over a fleece and still shoulders a rifle comfortably, another has taken it as far as rural Chile and reports it's warm without overheating in the 0-15°C range, ideal for mountain or farm work below freezing.
Model is 5'11" and 180 pounds wearing a size medium.
