The original manual of the Camp Fire Girls, an organization among whose founders were Dr. & Mrs. Luther Halsey Gulick, was published in 1912. The motto of the Camp Fire Girls, ""WoHeLo,"" was also the name of the Gulick's summer camp on Lake Sebago, ME. It stood for ""work, health, love."" ""The primary purpose of Camp Fire,"" said Dr. Gulick, ""is to promote service to others, team work, and opportunities for a well rounded life.""

Author Biography

Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick founded the Camp Fire Girls in 1910, along with his wife and a small group of educators. A sister organization to the Boy Scouts of America, the Camp Fire Girls were incorporated in 1912. Gulick, an advocate of physical fitness for young people, also had a role in helping found the Boy Scouts of America and played an important part in the early development of the YMCA.
