From the Author's Foreward: The favorable reception accorded to my Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science has encouraged me to offer another book to my readers. The present volume is written from the standpoint that we possess latent powers which a better knowledge of the truth regarding ourselves will enable us to develop, and that the purpose of the Bible is to lead us into this knowledge in a perfectly natural manner, while guarding us against the dangers arising from misuse of it. That we should ever arrive at a point when we shall be no longer confronted by the element of mystery which is inherent in the livingness of Life is impossible; but this mystery is the Mystery of Light and not of darkness, and will continually unfold itself into more light in response to our earnest inquiry into its meaning; and I have therefore given this book a title indicative of the ever-presence of an august Mystery together with intelligible Law.
