Product Description

by Niccola Machiavelli (Author)

Belfagor: A Tale is a novella written by Niccolo Machiavelli in 1840. The story centers around a demon named Belfagor who is sent to Earth to investigate claims that marriage is the cause of men's unhappiness. Belfagor takes on the form of a wealthy nobleman and marries a beautiful woman named Onesta. However, as time goes on, Belfagor realizes that marriage is indeed the cause of men's misery and he tries to escape back to Hell. Along the way, he faces numerous obstacles and is ultimately forced to make a deal with the devil in order to return home. The novella is a satirical commentary on the institution of marriage and the societal expectations placed on men and women. It is also an exploration of the nature of human desires and the consequences of giving into them. Machiavelli's writing is characterized by his wit and humor, making Belfagor: A Tale an entertaining and thought-provoking read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
