Because of Miguel is a story of a young Hispanic boy, Miguel, who is entering school and can't wait to learn how to read. Once at school, Miguel, realizes that learning to read takes time and patience. As he is learning the basics of learning to read, he notices that his Mama never reads the mail, his school notes, or his bedtime stories. Papa seems to take care of it all. Then all of a sudden it comes to him...his Mama can't read in English. Miguel then takes it upon himself to try and teach his Mama how to read. This is a warm-hearted and poignant story that brings to light a real issue that many immigrant people may face when coming to this country. Learning another language, especially reading it, can prove difficult. This story shows that with love and determination, a little boy can do just that...help his Mama learn to read.
