After a career in law enforcement, he taught full-time for a criminal justice program at a community college and served as an adjunct at the graduate level. He is currently the site coordinator for the Union Institute and University in San Diego, California. A certified DACUM facilitator, Michelson has been a trainer for the Public Safety Leadership & Ethics course in conjunction with the California State Chancellors' Office for Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa. Author Biography

For some police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers hoping to move up the ranks, two words provoke an anxiety attack: assessment center.

Used to evaluate a candidate's ability to perform in a variety of realistic role-play scenarios, assessment centers are often a very stressful experience for candidates vying for promotions.

Assessment Centers for Public Safety will help clarify and demystify the process. Author Richard S. Michelson, MPA, pulls from his law enforcement and education experience to provide not only a history of the centers but also information on the development of supervision and management theories.

Presenting important advice and tools for both career and supervisory skills development, this clear and focused resource offers examples of the types of exercises used at the centers, along with scenarios to help candidates realize the relationship between necessary leadership skills and the ability to demonstrate them during the promotional process.

This essential book will help you understand more about assessment center procedures and motivate you to work on the expertise needed for your new career.
