Product Description

by Grazia Deledda (Author), Helen Hester Colvill (Author)

Ashes, Cenere: A Sardinian Story is a novel written by Grazia Deledda and first published in 1908. The story is set in the island of Sardinia, Italy, during the late 19th century and revolves around the life of a young woman named Marianna Sirca. Marianna is born into a poor family and is forced to marry a wealthy landowner, Nicolai Serra, in order to improve her family's financial situation. However, Marianna soon realizes that her marriage is loveless and unhappy. She becomes increasingly isolated and desperate, leading her to have an affair with a local shepherd named Anselmo. The novel explores themes of love, duty, and the struggle for personal freedom in a society that places strict constraints on women. Deledda's vivid descriptions of Sardinian culture and landscape add depth and richness to the story. Ashes, Cenere: A Sardinian Story is considered a classic of Italian literature and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1926, making Deledda the first Italian woman to receive the award. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
