They were mostly from the same region and stock of people, Illyrians. Only divine help could tip the balance in his favor. As he was on his knees praying with his hands joined together and his head up towards the sky, it seemed to him that God tore apart a veil in the sky that prevents humans from seeing God's supernatural signs. He turned his head towards the sun. The sunrays had never been so warm and gentle and soothing and for the first time, they were not hurting or blinding his eyes. There in the sky Constantine saw a cross of light. And suddenly he heard a whisper in his ear: "In this sign there is victory."
