In 1896, Lady Elizabeth Gething, a fashionable, well-born, and educated Victorian young woman elopes and emigrates to the Texas Panhandle with husband Arthur Edward Gething who had been a barrister at Queen's Court, London. By 1896, he had established himself on a section of land he had won in a poker game in Fort Worth, Texas. He promises his bride a fine house and staff when she arrives, but she finds a ramshackle one-room shack. She never wears the elegant ball gowns in her trousseau that she brings to entertain her husbands' business and professional friends and their families. Thereby hangs this story, A SPIRIT TO RESIST. It is her story of surviving and thriving on the arid, harsh Great Plains in the United States.
Author Biography
Rose M. Hall grew up in the Texas Panhandle the older daughter of teachers. She graduated from Pampa High School and West Texas A&M University (formerly West Texas State University) with a teaching certificate. She taught in Independent School districts of Pampa, El Paso and Bandera in both regular and special education until her retirement in 1998. Her final teaching assignment was the elementary gifted and talented classroom in Bandera, Texas. After the death of her husband, George W. Hall, she continued to enjoy her sister's and her sons' families and her friends, national and international travels with Road Scholar and an international home exchange program. She is involved in visiting museums, research and writing in her home in a rural area near San Antonio, Texas.
