Author Biography

Charles Dickens is one of the most widely-read authors in history. He was born in Portsmouth, England in 1812. Dickens was famous for the humor and sympathy of his characterization and his criticism of social injustice. He died in 1870, and was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. During his lifetime, Dickens wrote fifteen novels, five novellas, and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. His major works include The Pickwick Papers (1837), Oliver Twist (1839), Nicholas Nickleby (1839), Old Curiosity Shop (1840-1841), A Christmas Carol (1843), Martin Chuzzlewit (1844), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), Little Dorrit (1857), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1861).
