胡杰曾经是军人，一直保持着正义与勇敢的精神。他的诚实、坚定和勇气，使他创作出有时代意义的作品，鼓舞了很多人。胡杰近年才开始搞版画创作，一出手就不凡。饥荒、劳改，书的故事，我们与祖国，还有什么会比这些题材更能牵动我们的心？黑白对比，线条排列，刀法劲利。就这样，让思想与历史被铭刻，让它们合成一种鼓舞人们的力量。版画集中有一组作品叫《要有光》，胡杰说，"不只你自己的心里要有光，还要把它打在大地上。"大家一起，把光打在大地上吧！
