by Daniel Dunglas Home (Author)

An autobiography of the most sensational physical medium the world has ever seen. Not only could Daniel D. Home convey messages from the spirits, just as most mediums do, but he could also produce tangible evidence of the presence of the spirits themselves. In his s ances, which were attended by royalty and the leading literary and social elite of his day, the hands of the spirits touched the sitters, moved heavy furniture, and tilted tables without spilling their contents. Home could also float in the air without any visible means of support, light gas jets with his fingertips, handle red-hot coals without burning his fingers, and elongate his body by almost a foot - a feat which only saints have been known to do. Although many have speculated that Home must have been guilty of fraud, there has never been any compelling evidence of it. This Cosimo Classic is based on the Second Edition of the autobiography, which was originally published in 1864. DANIEL DOUGLAS HOME (1833-1886) was perhaps the greatest physical medium of all time. The astounding phenomena he produced first appeared during the heyday of Spiritualism in America when he was a young boy living with his aunt in Connecticut. She promptly kicked him out of the house. Home became the darling of European society and was twice married to Russian noblewomen. He never charged for his s ances, which usually took place in good light. Much of what Home was reported to have done remains a mystery to this day.
