Those were Jake's first words to me. They should have been an ample warning: he was too stupid even to lie. Not fresh out of jail, it turned out, but a psychiatric hospital, which unfortunately roused my interest. We were drinking 7&7's in the bar at a motel by the freeway. I was eager to escape from one oppression and blind to one much worse, ready to bind up my fate with anybody willing to buy me a drink.
He proceeded to tell me the whole story. How he and his wife had developed a taste for cocaine and snorted it together every night for over a year. How she'd been systematically denying it since his arrest, how everyone believed her, how this drove him to despair.
