The mutilation of an already dead body as a form of punishment is known as post-execution punishment. The extensive application of the death penalty and post-execution punishments along with the fact that vast numbers of criminals were hanged on the gallows have long been described by historians as a crucial component of social interactions throughout the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. This was the pinnacle of a terror-based criminal justice system.
