Charming and wonderfully heartfelt, author and biographer Judy Ludemann's debut, Our Legacy, describes what distinguished Western homesteading families that were able to succeed after claiming their new land after the Homestead Act of 1862. As Ludemann follows the roots of her maternal and paternal families, she offers a legacy for future generations to explore, celebrate, and ultimately live up to. Beginning in the late 1800s, she provides readers thumbnail sketches and engaging vignettes of how difficult life was on the range-and how wonderful. She illustrates the toils and sweat of hard work, as well as life's joys. By recalling what the Hagerman and Stevens families strived for and believed in, laughed about and loved, future generations will understand that when life gets tough, the tough get going and that to be a part of such a decent, industrious, good-natured family is to have a steel backbone, and a good amount of pluck, as a birthright.
