by Martha Walters Acker (Author)

By: Martha W. Acker, Pub. 1987, reprinted 2025, 200 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #978-1-63914-225-5. Franklin County was created in 1784 and was considered the 8th county of the state. It is located in the northeastern portion of the state boarding South Carolina along the Savannah River. Early on, Franklin County boarded Wilkes and Greene Counties, Georgia and Pendleton District/County, South Carolina. Franklin County is the parent county in part or whole to: Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Hart, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Stephens. Marriage licenses were not required until 1805 in Georgia. They were granted by the Clerk of the Ordinary Court. The marriage and date were to be returned on the license to the Clerk who was to record the marriage. This work is a comparison of all extant loose marriage licenses from 1805-1850 on file at the Georgia Archives to the marriage licenses recorded in books. There ar some remarkable differences in the two records in many cases. The marriages are listed in alphabetical order by groom surname followed by a bride's index which mentions approximately 5,000 names.
