It takes place on a lake in Florida where a wild bird, affectionately known as Larry Bird, befriends the author's family. A tale of true friendship, they help Larry through injuries, all the while preserving his status as a wild bird. Larry visits the family daily, even peeking into the windows of their home looking for them if they aren't outside! Illustrated with the author's own personal collection taken over a span of many years, the book allows a unique opportunity to explore colorful photographs and see the bird's character come to life. The narrative takes the reader through his true-life adventures, while offering an educational thread and gentle humor.
As a delightful read aloud or early school aged readers, children and adults will find the character, Larry Bird, to be engaging and fascinating, as they follow some of the hardships and triumphs of a wild bird. I also believe they will identify with his heartwarming relationship with the family, as they fall in love with Larry, and he truly becomes a part of their family.
