In June 1999, after three months of NATO air strikes had driven Serbian forces back from the province of Kosovo, the United Nations Security Council authorized creation of an interim civilian administration. Under this mandate, the UN was empowered to coordinate reconstruction, maintain law and order, protect human rights, and create democratic institutions. Author Biography
Iain King worked for UNMIK from April 2000 to December 2003. He spent 2003 as head of planning for the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. He is now director of programs at the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. Whit Mason was an analyst with the International Crisis Group in 2001 and then speechwriter and public affairs officer for UNMIK from May 2002 to January 2004. He is now an independent political analyst and consultant.
