Author Biography

Since 1988, David has studied and worked in youth education, soccer development and coaching. A former University Professor and CEO of a Youth Sports Company, David has been fortunate to travel extensively in the USA, meeting with coaches and club officials and learning about their approach to player development and coaching. Currently, David oversees United Soccer Coaches eLearning program. In a professional capacity, David has been providing consultant services and support to volunteer based youth programs for over 10 years, helping clubs to become more serious about player and coach development. David contributes articles regularly to soccer publications, has written books focusing on player and coach development and presents at national soccer events. David has an extensive coaching and playing background and works full time in youth soccer, education and club management. Newbery is a Director of Coaching and Player Development for a Youth Soccer Club with oversight of the coaching education and programming for recreation, competitive and elite programs. David played semi-pro football in London and Birmingham (English Leagues) during a 15 playing year career before moving into coaching and management. During 30 years of coaching, Newbery has coached at youth, College (NCAA D1) and Semi Professional levels. He developed the 5 Stage of Development Pathway, used as a framework for the United Soccer Coaches Player Development Curriculum model in 2007 (an adaptation of the LTAD model from Canada). He regularly contributes articles to soccer publications, has written books focusing on player and coach development and presents at national coaching events. In a volunteer capacity David coaches his son and daughter's soccer teams in local and regional competitions. Newbery has various coaching awards, most notably the United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma. David is also an United Soccer Coaches Staff Instructor, delivering coaching education courses.
