He published his first poem \"The Negro Speaks of Rivers\" in \u003ci\u003eThe Crisis\u003c\/i\u003e magazine in 1921. His first book of poems, \u003ci\u003eThe Weary Blues\u003c\/i\u003e, which includes the poem \"Dream Variation,\" was published by \u003ci\u003eKnopf\u003c\/i\u003e in 1926 when Hughes was only twenty-four years old. Hughes was an important leader of the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s.
