**Mark S. Smith** is Skirball Professor of Biblical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at New York University. He is the author of fifteen books, including _The Early History of God_; _The Pilgrimage Pattern in Exodus_ (with contributions by the archaeologist Elizabeth Bloch-Smith); _The Origins of Biblical Monotheism_; _God in Translation_; _Poetic Heroes_; and _How Human Is God?
