**Erica Gies** is an independent journalist and National Geographic Explorer who writes about water, climate change, plants, and animals for _Scientific American_, the _New York Times_, _Nature_, the _Atlantic_, and other outlets. She cofounded two environmental news startups, Climate Confidential and This Week in Earth. She is based in San Francisco and Victoria, British Columbia.
