### Author Biography

**Robert Zaretsky**'s books include _Boswell's Enlightenment_, _A Life Worth Living, Catherine & Diderot,_ and _The Subversive Simone Weil_, the latter also published by the University of Chicago Press. A columnist for the _Jewish Daily Forward_, he is also a frequent contributor to the _New York Times_, the _Washington Post_, _Foreign Affairs_, the _Times Literary Supplement_, the _Los Angeles Review of Books,_ and Slate. Zaretsky lives in Houston with his wife and children. Zaretsky teaches at the University of Houston.
