**James McBride** is the author of the _New York Times_\-bestselling novel _The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store_, the Oprah's Book Club selection _Deacon King Kong_, the National Book Award-winning _The Good Lord Bird_, the American classic _The Color of Water_, the novels _Song Yet Sung_ and _Miracle at St. Anna_, the story collection _Five-Carat Soul_, and _Kill 'Em and Leave_, a biography of James Brown. The recipient of a National Humanities Medal and an accomplished musician, McBride is also a distinguished writer in residence at New York University.
