**TOM NOLAN** has been a freelance writer for many publications (including _Rolling Stone_, _The Village Voice_, _The New York Times Book Review_, and _Oxford American_) since age 18--and a Ross Macdonald reader since age 11. He is the author of _Ross Macdonald: A Biography_ (1999) and editor of Ross Macdonald's _The Archer Files_ (2007). He is also the author of _Artie Shaw, King of the Clarinet_ (reissued 2011) and has been crime fiction reviewer for _The Wall Street Journal_ since 1990. He lives in Burbank, California.
