**David J. Gibson** is Professor of Plant Biology and University Distinguished Scholar at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is Senior Editor of the _Journal of Ecology_, and author of a number of books, including _Grasslands and Climate Change_ (2019, with J. A. Newman), _Methods in Comparative Plant Population Ecology, 2nd edition_ (2015) and _Grasses and Grassland Ecology_ (2009).
