In 1944 Allied codebreakers learned the Imperial Japanese Navy had dispatched the cargo submarine _I-52_ to occupied France with tons of military supplies and payment--in gold--for German assistance. _I-52_ undertook the mission as part of the Yanagi missions, a military program meant to alleviate Japan's desperate need for military material and technical knowledge. ### Author Biography

**David W. Jourdan** is president of Nauticos, a company devoted to deep-sea exploration. He and his Nauticos team are responsible for the discovery of the Japanese World War II submarine _I-52_ in the Atlantic. He is the author of several books, including _The Search for the Japanese Fleet: USS_ Nautilus _and the Battle of Midway_ (Potomac Books, 2015) and _The Deep Sea Quest for Amelia Earhart_. **James P. Delgado** is a maritime archaeologist, explorer, and writer. He has investigated more than one hundred shipwrecks and is the author of _Silent Killers: Submarines and Underwater Warfare_.
