### Author Biography

Born in New Zealand, **Thomas Daniell** is a practicing architect who has been living and working in Kyoto since the early 1990s. Widely published, he is a contributing editor for the architecture journals _Mark_ and _Archis_.

Born in Tokyo, **Akihiko Seki** spent over 20 years working outside of Japan. Since taking early retirement, he has traveled with his wife and cameras throughout Japan and Asia. He is the photographer and author of _Asian Resorts_ and also photographed and co-authored _Ryokan: Japan's Finest Spas and Inns_.

New Foreword by **Matthew Stavros** an historian of early Japan at the University of Sydney and the author of _Kyoto: An Urban History of Japan's Premodern Capital_ (UHawai'I, 2014). His research focuses on the urban and architectural history of Japan to about 1700, with interests extending to religion, material culture, and monumentalism in East and Southeast Asia. www.mstavros.com
