**Charles R. Smith Jr.** is the author of _Hoop Queens_ and its companions, _Hoop Kings_ and _Hoop Kings 2: New Royalty_, as well as _Soccer Queens_, _Chameleon_, _Pick-Up Game_ with Marc Aronson, and the Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book _Twelve Rounds to Glory: The Story of Muhammad Ali_, illustrated by Bryan Collier_._ He is also the recipient of a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for his photographs in _My People_, an adaptation of the Langston Hughes poem. Charles R. Smith Jr. lives in New York.
