### Author Biography

**Virginia Woolf** (1882-1941) was an English novelist, critic, and publisher who became a key figure of literary modernism. She published many novels as well as nonfiction and criticism. In 1941, she committed suicide by drowning herself in the River Ouse, near her Sussex home.

**Joanna Kavenna** is a British novelist and travel writer. Her works include _The Field_ _Guide to Reality_ _The Ice Museum_, _Inglorious_, and _The Birth of Love_. Her short stories and essays have appeared in _The New Yorker_, the _London Review of Books_, _Arc_, _The_ _Guardian_, and _The New York Times_. She has received the Alistair Horne Visiting Fellowship and the Orange Prize for New Writing, and in 2013 was named as one of _Granta_'s Best of Young British Novelists. She lives in Oxford.
