### Author Biography

**Alessandro Barbero** is an Italian historian, novelist, and essayist. He won the 1996 Strega Prize, for _Bella vita e guerre altrui di Mr. Pyle gentiluomo_. Barbero is the author of _The Battle_, an account of the Battle of Waterloo; _The Day of the Barbarians_, the story of the Battle of Adrianople; and _Charlemagne--_all published in Britain. He writes for _Il Sole 24 Ore_ and _La Stampa_, is the editor of _Storia d'Europa e del Mediterranean,_ and regularly appears on Italian television and radio. In 2005, the Republic of France awarded Barbero with the title of Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He lives in Italy and _Dante_ is his first book to be published in America.
