### Author Biography

**Professor Richard Holmes** was one of the UK's leading military historians. As well as being the General Editor of the _Oxford Companion to Military History_, he presented several documentary series for the BBC. His books included _The Napoleonic Wars Experience_, as well as _Tommy: The British Soldier on the Western Front_, _Wellington: The Iron Duke_ and _Red Coat_. He died in 2011.
