**CHRIS OFFUTT** is the author of the novels _Shifty's  
Boys, The Killing Hills, Country Dark_, and _The Good Brother_;  
the short-story collections _Kentucky Straight_ and _Out  
of the Woods_, and three memoirs: _The Same River Twice_, _No  
Heroes_, and _My Father, the Pornographer_. He has written  
screenplays for _Weeds_, _True Blood_, and _Treme_,  
and has received fellowships from the Lannan and Guggenheim foundations. He  
lives near Oxford, Mississippi
