Marta McDowell's writing has appeared in _The New York Times_, _Woman's Day, Country Gardening_, and elsewhere_._ Her previous books include _Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life_, _All the Presidents' Gardens_, _The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder_, _Emily Dickinson's Gardening Life_, and _Unearthing The Secret Garden_. She consults for public gardens and private clients, writes and lectures on gardening topics, and teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden, where she studied landscape design. She lives, writes, and gardens in Chatham, New Jersey.
