**Simon Horobin** is Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Magdalen College. He is the author of _The English Language: A Very Short Introduction_ (OUP, 2018), _How English Became English_ (OUP, 2016), and _Does Spelling Matter?_ (OUP, 2013). He has appeared as an English language expert on radio and television programmes such as Radio 2's _Jeremy Vine Show_ and Radio 4's _Stephen Fry's English Delight_.
