### Author Biography

After seventeen years as a columnist at _The Washington Post,_ ANNE APPLEBAUM became a staff writer at _The Atlantic_ in January 2020. She is the author of many critically acclaimed and award-winning books, including _Twilight of Democracy_, _Red Famine, Iron Curtain, Between East and West_, and _Gulag,_ winner of the Pulitzer Prize. She divides her time between Poland, where her husband is foreign minister, and Washington, D.C.
