Senegalese director Ousmane Sembene has often been referred to as a pioneer of the sub-Saharan African cinema. From _Borom Sarret_ (1963) to _Guelwaar_ (1992), Sembene has developed a political and aesthetic project that has deeply influenced the evolution of African filmmaking. This project, with its goal to create a new Africa free of the remnants of colonialist oppression, has subsequently become the objective of emerging generations of African filmmakers. ### Author Biography

SHEILA PETTY is Associate Professor of Film and Video at the University of Regina. She has written various articles and reviews on African cinema in such journals as _Canadian Journal of Communication_, _Cineaction_, _Society for Visual Anthropology Review_, _Issue: A Journal of Opinion_ and _Visions_. She was a contributor to _Films d'Afrique_ (1991), has curated several film and video exhibitions/installations, and is currently preparing a book and exhibition project on national identities in African, Brazilian and Quebec television serials.
